Manchester Cleaning Show 2018 Review
The Manchester Cleaning Show had a total of 2411 attendees over two days – a 4.5 % increase on the inaugural Manchester Cleaning Show figures in 2016.
The seminar sessions were well attended and focused on ‘Leading the Industry towards a prosperous future’, ‘Future Ready Workshops’, ‘Health & Safety Workshops’ and ‘Promoting your business workshops’.
The FWC Seminar “Removing the Risk from Window Cleaning” was attended by around 26 visitors – presented by Executive Committee member Steve Kennedy – Steve has been on the Executive Committee for two Years and has 25 Years experience in Commercial Window and Specialist Cleaning, and he was a very early adopter of IOSH Training.
The programme described the aims of the Federation and how we support our member businesses with advice on managing their general health and safety risks; how we recognise a need for robust risk assessments and safe systems of work in the removal of all risks from window cleaning activities.
A need for an industry specific Safety procurement scheme as large national companies call for businesses to be registered by a Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme before employing their services.
Preparing all the necessary information to become a registered accredited contractor can be an extremely tedious and lengthy process, and some members find them confusing and generic to the cleaning industry as a whole. This is why the FWC developed its Safety accreditation scheme SAM, the only bespoke standard that needs to be driven for our industry – more importantly it is training based rather than just paper trail based.
The Window Cleaning Challenge proved as popular as ever, and was adjudicated by Executive members: Paul Thrupp, Scott Smith and Steve Kennedy together with Terry Burrows who were kept busy at the competition stand –judging/ timekeeping both for a local TV company filming Terry Turbo ( filmed on YouTube). The window cleaning competition had 14 contenders participating each day, encouraged by Terry to take part to attenpt his World Record – however Terry managed to retain his title for yet another year. Winners on each day were:
- Daniel Keate on day 1 with a time of:16.28 seconds.
- Tony Burley on day 2 with a time of: 19.43 seconds.
- Both took away £250 prize money.
The FWC stand welcomed many visitors over the two-day event with free promotional gifts and advice – in addition to signing up two new members.

Our official FWC adjudicators will be on hand to judge the winners and submit to the Guinness Book of Records if any male or female are fast enough to beat the existing records – 9.14 seconds set by Terry Burrows in 2009 or the fastest female record of 16.28 seconds set by Deborah Morris in 2011.
